Click Here for Colon & Rectal Oral Board Prep Course Options If you have any questions regarding the right combination and timing of courses for you, please call Dr. Argy -- it only takes an average of 5 minutes to determine your optimal preparation. Dr. Argy's cell is 508.221.1101. | Enroll Online | Contact Odyssey | Back to top | 1) Content vs. Practice: the exam involves a mixture of presentation skills and knowledge, requiring the candidate to synthesize information under emotional pressure with very tight time constraints in front of two board examiners. Doing this well, and to the examiners' satisfaction, demands an effective presentation approach with appropriate factual content. Focusing only on presentation skills, or only on content, could compromise your exam performance. Therefore I strongly urge candidates to prepare using a mixture of practice and content review. That being said, if you feel you only want to work primarily on one or the other, that is up to you. 2) Content issues: there are about 350 main scenarios overall, about 100 of which are uncommonly used, and several thousand minor variations. If you want to cover every single main scenario, the options for doing so are a one-day (didactic) Comprehensive Review, a Private Tutorial (which can combine didactic with practice,) or a Comprehensive Review in a Private Group Session. Dr. Argy will indicate which are the more common and which are the more rare scenarios. 3) Practice issues: Odyssey teaches you an approach to presenting information which you can apply to any scenario, regardless of the specific content of the question and your actual experience with the subject. This allows you to present information comfortably and consistently. More practice as a surgeon increases your skill, speed and comfort in the OR. The same is true of oral board preparation. 4) Study habits: when you prepare with Odyssey, you will learn an effective, efficient approach to organizing and delivering content, which then makes your study habits far better and faster, especially compared to the tedious, cumbersome techniques used for written board preparation. The sooner you learn these techniques, the easier it will be to study and the more information you will be able to cover. 5) Timing of preparation: Most Odyssey candidates prepare about a month before the exam, and the vast majority pass. Despite having passed, many volunteer, in retrospect, they wish they had prepared earlier than a month ahead. That`s why I recommend early preparation for all candidates, preferably 2-3 months in advance. If you have prior exam experience, I suggest preparation 4-6 months in advance. With this perspective, you can decide what you want to emphasize as you select one or more of the courses that Odyssey offers, including issues of content, practice, timing, duration, and cost.
Click here to see Course Formats at a Glance Course Formats in Depth Small Group Session: you participate with no more than 10 candidates in a relaxed setting, with focus on discussions/summaries of content and direct access to Dr. Argy and guest faculty. Candidates benefit from collaborative learning, personal attention, and at least 6 separate individualized scenarios, (and up to 12 depending on enrollment in the Session) resulting in markedly improved presentation skills and confidence. The A and B Sessions have minimal content overlap, so attending an A and B Session maximizes content exposure to about 140-160 topics. Small Group Audit: excellent method to get a basic exposure to the most current exam material and reliable board exam techniques the examiners want to see. This format allows you to sit in on a Small Group Session as an observer, but does not include any practice scenarios. (An optional 25 minute assessment with Dr. Argy can be arranged in advance at an additional cost.) Private Tutorial: if you prefer more focused attention, and especially if you have failed a prior exam, consider a private tutorial. Dr. Argy works individually with you using his 12 years of oral board preparation experience and knowledge of thousands of exam scenarios to identify your specific strengths and weaknesses. A personalized plan is developed to help you improve your performance, and that plan is implemented with Dr. Argy's guidance and input. Most Popular Option Small Group Session PLUS Audit since the content in the A and B Small Group Session has minimal overlap, this combination offers you an opportunity to get practice and expanded content in one sitting. You can request to do the Small Group Session first, then the Audit, or do the Audit first, and then the Small Group Session. When you sign up for a Small Group Session and a Small Group Audit at the same time, (SGSession + SGAudit or SGAudit + SGSession) you save $200 off the total tuition while getting everything you need! You must sign up for the combination at the same time to take advantage of this option. Private Group Session: you arrange your own Small Group Session! Gather together surgeons in your area (minimum of 6) and Dr. Argy will come out to your location at a time that is convenient for your group. Stay closer to home and work, with less expense for travel and accommodations. If you prefer a group smaller than 6, you can still arrange to work with surgeons of your choosing and meet Dr. Argy in Boston.
Comprehensive Review: Dr. Argy has compiled every question he has ever seen on the orals into a one day, intensive didactic review. The material covered in these scenarios will be summarized, and the frequency of the particular scenario (common, occasional, and rare) will be mentioned, so you can decide how to prioritize your studying. Since the Review runs 2-4 weeks before the exam, it is a great refresher that still gives you time to study topics before your test! Candidates who attend a Review are STRONGLY urged to participate in a Small Group Session prior to the Review to maximize the benefit. Speak to Dr. Argy to see why. | Enroll Online | Contact Dr. Argy | Back to top | If you have taken the exam before, it is strongly advised that you speak with Dr. Argy.
