Frequently Asked Questions about Surgery Board Preparation

(You'll get all your questions answered with an Odyssey course.)

When is the best time to prepare for the oral board exam?    The sooner the better. Cramming may work for the writtens, but it doesn`t work well for the orals. In addition, because your study habits and presentation techniques will improve as a result of taking an Odyssey course, you will want time to implement that new knowledge before you take the exam. Remember, for surgery as for board prep, technique is not something you forget -- that's why you should prepare early.

What should I do if I failed the orals on a previous attempt?   I recommend to most of these candidates that they take a Private Tutorial at least once, followed by additional preparation (Tutorial or Small Group Session +/- Audit) several weeks later. This combination gives the candidate a personalized evaluation, identifies areas of weakness, and develops a plan to improve performance. The followup PT and/or SGS reinforces what was learned in the initial Private Tutorial and builds skills and confidence.

Should I take a written board review course to study content for the orals? Simply put ... no. The writtens require regurgitation of information, the orals require synthesis. Studying written content is an incredibly inefficient way to prepare for the orals.

How does Odyssey know the most recent exam content?  Dr. Argy gets follow up with over 94% of his candidates after they take the orals. He therefore knows what scenarios the examiners are covering in every exam period.

What is the most common reason candidates fail?  The majority of candidates know enough content to pass, but they don't know what the examiners are looking for and how to deliver it. Odyssey candidates learn exactly what the examiners want and the optimal way to present it.
